Europe Day: a strong Europe is needed, now more than ever

May 10, 2022

This year’s 9th of May celebrations for Europe Day were in the context of the war in Ukraine and the final recommendations on the Conference on the Future of Europe.

Our President François Decoster, Mayor of Saint-Omer and one of our representatives in the Conference on the Future of Europe, said that perhaps more than ever, we should celebrate Europe Day, and that we need a strong Europe for our shared future:

This year we celebrate Europe Day in a context where war is again in Europe. We have to think what it means for Europe, for the European project. The challenges that launched the European project at the time – such as food security, energy supply, our own security industry – are at the heart of the European agenda. That’s why celebrating Europe Day this year is particular given that the challenges that launched the European project are at stake. We need important decisions, and that’s why on 9 May we met in Strasbourg for the final recommendations of the Conference on the Future of Europe

Several other members, including but not limited to Jean-Noel Verfaillie, Mayor of Marly, or Manuel Alejandro Cardenete, regional minister for Education and sports of Andalusia, also marked this occasion in their cities and region(s). Let yourself be inspired, and start thinking about Europe Day 2023.
