The European elections concern us all. Between 6 and 9 June 2024 EU citizens will be able to choose the 720 members who will represent them until 2029. The political family or families that hold the majority in the European Parliament determine the political direction given to the European Union, which directly impacts on the direction of local communities, because two thirds of EU decisions are implemented at the local and regional level. Encouraging citizens to express their choice for the next 5 years is therefore crucial, not only for the democratic life of Europe as a continent, but also for each local community as a fundamental part of the Union.

The first thing you need to know is a) the exact date of the European election in your country (6th, or 7th, or 8th, or 9th), b) the procedure for your citizens to be eligible to vote – do they need to register on the census, what is the deadline?, c) what is the procedure for EU citizens residing in your country to vote in the EU election?, d) how you intend to inform your citizens of these important facts. Tools to help you answer the questions – Why should I vote?
Traditionally, the media present the European election as a national election – they check to see which party has won the highest number of votes. But this is a misrepresentation and a terrible disservice to citizens! It distorts the reality of the election, because what matters is which European political family has obtained a majority in the European Parliament, not which national party has obtained more votes. The latter is only relevant when presented as the national party’s contribution to its European political family. Many citizens therefore do not understand why they are voting in the European elections or why they should vote at all. Below we offer you additional information to help your citizens understand how crucial their vote is.
