World Mayor 2018: Jasna Gabrič shortlisted!

September 4, 2018

Jasna

Support her and vote now if you know Mayor Gabrič or her work.Gabrič, member of the ALDE CoR Bureau, was shortlisted by the World Mayor Organization together with 26 other female Mayors from across the globe. This year’s edition is dedicated entirely to women in local government, featuring the achievements of female mayors from across the world and honouring the best of them. The 2018 World Mayor Prize and Commendations will be conferred on women who have made outstanding and long-lasting contributions to their communities. Mayor Gabrič is the only member of the European Committee of the Regions on this list, making her inclusion all the more exceptional.

In the testimonials of the World Mayor website, Gabrič is hailed as a wind of change bringing optimism to her city of Trbovlje; she was the youngest female Mayor elected in 2014 in Slovenia and one of the most hard-working, improving the lives of her citizens. She reduced the unemployment rate to under 10% (coming from 21%) while at the same time building a multicultural community leading to the transformation of a forgotten, less developed old mining city into one of the most developed cities in Slovenia.

How to vote for Mayor Gabrič

Voting is now taking place for the winner of the 2018 World Mayor Prize and the runners-up. Anyone wishing to support Gabrič’s candidacy is invited to vote by email and to comment on her achievements. Please explain, preferably in English, why you vote for Mayor Gabrič and why she deserves to win the 2018 World Mayor Prize.

The City Mayors board of fellows will choose the winner and runner-ups based on the number of email votes received and the strength and passion of supporting testimonials. The organisers believe that the persuasiveness of argument is as important as the number of votes. This ensures that an exceptional mayor from a smaller city can compete on equal terms with a mayor from a large metropolis.

Support the candidacy of Mayor Gabric by emailing your reasons why she should win the 2018 World Mayor Prize. Please insert ‘Trbovlje Mayor’ in the subject line and provide your name at the end of your testimonial. It can be your full name, first name or initials. Please also include where you live and mail this to: trbovlje@worldmayor.com

ALDE CoR is also proud to announce that a member of our liberal Mayors network, Françoise Schepmans, Mayor of Molenbeek (Belgium), is among the shortlisted candidates. If you know her or her work and wish to support her candidacy, please vote by mailing molenbeek@worldmayor.com. Mayor Schepmans has been shortlisted for her efoorts to turn aorund Molenbeek’s reputation following its links to recent terrorist attacks in France and Belgium.

Our President, Bart Somers, Mayor of Mechelen, won the World Mayor Prize in 2016 for his outstanding achievements in welcoming refugees during recent years and for his long-term integration of immigrants from different cultures, religions and social backgrounds.
