European Committee of the Regions and European Commission launch joint network of EU councillors

April 29, 2025

A new EU-wide network aimed at boosting local engagement in European Union policy was officially launched on 12 April 2025 by the European Commission and the European Committee of the Regions (CoR). The EU Councillors Network brings together local and regional elected representatives who are committed to informing citizens about EU policies and contributing to the democratic debate at local and regional level.

The initiative, already consisting of 3000 participants, builds on the success of two similar existing initiatives and aims to bring the European project closer to citizens by focusing on engaging the level of government citizens trust the most. It will empower municipal and regional councillors, presidents and mayors to act as a bridge between EU institutions and the communities they represent. The goal is to counter disinformation, build trust in the European project, and make EU policies more tangible for citizens.

Speaking at the launching event, François Decoster, President of the Renew Europe Group in the CoR and Special CoR Representative for the new network, highlighted the importance of involving local leaders more directly in European affairs. As Special representative, Decoster will play a key role in representing the CoR while coordinating the Network’s activities and ensuring that local representatives have a voice in EU policymaking. His appointment reflects the Renew Europe Group’s longstanding commitment to reinforcing democratic engagement at all levels of governance.

Membership of the network is open to any local or regional elected politician from across the EU*. Members benefit from a range of products and services, including study visits to Brussels, training sessions, workshops to enhance members’ understanding of EU functions.

As an EU councillor belonging the Renew Europe family, benefits could include the opportunity to participate in our Group Meetings and external events, as well the CoR plenary sessions. Councillors from across the EU can now register via the Network’s new dedicated platform, where they will find resources, opportunities for exchange, and tools to communicate about the EU in their local contexts.
